Melamine by itself is nontoxic in low doses, but when combined with cyanuric acid, it can cause fatal kidney stones due to the formation of an insoluble melamine cyanurate. Melamine is described as being "Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Chronic exposure may cause cancer or reproductive damage. Eye, skin and respiratory irritant." However, the toxic dose is on par with common table salt with an LD50 of more than 3 grams per kilogram of bodyweight. FDA scientists explained that when melamine and cyanuric acid are absorbed into the bloodstream, they concentrate and interact in the urine-filled renal microtubules, then crystalize and form large numbers of round yellow crytals, which in turn block and damage the renal cells that line the tubes, causing the kidneys to malfunction.

what's happening to the world?! war between US and IRAQ is still a very long way from "over" and here comes this very frightening MELAMINE a.k.a. "Milk Scare" scandal... this is really alarming...
i have received several forwarded text messages regarding this issue and i can't help but get paranoid... i can hear this in the office and at home... in televisions and in the internet... the whole world is going crazy over this toxic chemical -- melamine... hearing that 4 babies have died and approximately 53,000 others sickened due to melamine-contaminated infant formula milk in China just made the panic and tension grow larger...
this is really scaring me... we consume a lot of dairy products daily so how can we just take this for granted? especially people who love chocolates, ice cream, yogurts, powdered and bottled milk a lot. i just heard recently that cadbury and oreo were positive... it made me so sad...
So far, only 2 Chinese milk products namely Green Food Yili Pure Milk and Mengniu Original Drink Milk from China have both tested and confirmed positive for melamine contamination according to the Department of Health (DOH), tests conducted by BFAD. There were about 56 milk products subject to testing, 28 of which have been completely tested and cleared (others still in process). below is a list of those that have been tested negative for melamine contamination as identified by our Health Secretary Francisco Duque:
1. Anchor Lite Milk

this is the list they have as of October 3, 2008. you may view the entire article @ http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/10/03/08/two-chinese-milk-products-rp-test-positive-melamine
though it would be very hard for me to stop myself from eating my favorite biscuit cookie (oreo double stuff), i have no choice but to give it up for now until all results have been released from lab tests... keeping my fingers crossed again...
sigh...
